A spring electrical checklist for every homeowner
March 11, 2024Flood damage and electrical wiring: What you need to know
May 7, 2024When you buy an older home, you are the owner of a charming space that has character to spare. But while this is desirable, an older home can come with electrical issues.
If you own an older home – or if you are considering buying one, there are a few things you need to know about possible electrical issues. Read on:
- Faulty or outdated systems: Many older homes come with an abundance of fun features but they can also come with faulty or outdated wiring systems. This can be dangerous and it can also be limiting because modern families need more power than ever before. If your home has an outdated system, it’s best to have it fixed by a qualified electrician right away as it can leave you vulnerable to fires or electrical shocks.
- Ungrounded outlets: Many older homes only have outdated two-prong outlets which can be a safety hazard in that they lack a third grounding wire. That third wire protects you against fires and shocks. So, if this is the case in your home, you need to upgrade your outlets pronto!
- Outdated or damaged switches and outlets: One issue with older homes is that it is possible no one has replaced outdated or damaged switches and outlets. If you notice flickering lights, a buzzing noise or burn marks or a burn odor, you will need to have the outlet or switch replaced by a qualified electrician.
- No GFCI outlets: Older homes often lack Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor (GFCI) outlets which protect your family against electrical shock where there’s water, like a bathroom, kitchen, laundry room or outdoors. This is a relatively easy fix but is critical for safety!
