Summer and your electrical system: What you need to know
June 3, 2024What you need to know about installing recessed lighting
August 5, 2024Are you a new homeowner? If you are, you might not know what to do in the event of an electrical emergency.
To that end, here is a handy checklist to keep in the event of an electrical emergency. You don’t want to be caught off guard!
Here are some things to know about an electrical emergency:
- Stay calm: If you have an electrical emergency, the first thing to do is stay calm. If no one is in danger, quickly move away from the danger.
- After you are at a safe distance, call for help. Your local fire department is a great help, so tell them about the emergency – including injuries or potential hazards. You can also call a qualified electrician if there is no immediate danger.
- If you can do it safely, shut off your power. You can do this on your home’s electrical panel. If you don’t know how to do this, wait for professional help!
- Stay away from water! If there is a fire, do not attempt to put it out with water. If there is a flood, do not enter flood water for any reason. You can get electrocuted. If there is a fire, use a Class C fire extinguisher or wait for help.
- In the case of downed power lines, always assume it is live and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away and call for help.
- Take pictures if you can do it safely to help document the incident. This can help with insurance claims or emergency aid.
An electrical emergency can be scary, but if you stay calm and remember these tips, you and your loved ones can navigate it safely. It’s never a bad idea to leave it to a trusted expert or professional – especially if you are a new homeowner!
