Electrical code updates: What homeowners need to know
January 30, 2024Older homes and electrical issues: What you need to know
April 5, 2024As we leave winter behind, it is an amazing time to draw up a spring electrical checklist of projects to knock off before summer arrives.
By making up a spring electrical checklist, you can ensure to do the little projects and maintenance issues that keep your home safe and running smoothly. Here are a few things to consider. Read on:
- Electrical panels and outlets: Your electrical panel might not be something you think of often, because it’s out of sight – and out of mind. But it is an important part of your home and needs to be on your spring electrical checklist! Your panel is usually in your garage, a utility room or your basement and it protects your home’s circuits against overload. It can wear out or become outdated so it’s a great idea to have a qualified electrician out to look at it! And also, it’s a great time to check out the outlets in your home. Are they outdated? Damaged? Do you have GFCI units that work in areas like kitchens, baths and laundry rooms? If your outlets are damaged, singled, make a buzzing sound or just don’t seem optimal, have them replaced.
- Surge protection: Do you have surge protection on your appliances and devices? If you don’t, spring is a great time to fix that. Surge protectors can help you during spring and summer storms when there is a risk of surges that can harm your pricey items. While you can get individual ones, there are also whole house options available.
- Appliances: We rely on our washers, dryers, refrigerators, computers and more on a daily basis. And spring is a great time to make sure they are in good working condition and properly maintained. Also, make sure they area cleaned and plugged into GFCI outlets.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Twice a year you should be testing these systems to make sure they are in proper working order. If they don’t work, you could be risking your family’s safety. And if they are dated or nonfunctional, remedy that immediately!
- Outdoor lighting and outlets: Do you have outdoor lighting or outlets? Spring is a great time to make sure they weren’t damaged during the harsh winter weather. Take a stroll around your home and do a visual inspection – making sure there aren’t animal nests or debris near them either!
